So, congress recently passed a virtue signal condemning the use of the phrase "from the river to the sea Palestine will be free" in reference to their protests. And a lot of leftists are pissed off. Like how come we cant get nice things like a minimum wage or healthcare but we get this? Fair point btw, but it's because this is bipartisan and anything good the republicans (and maybe some democrats) are gonna reflexively oppose it. Meanwhile most people on both sides of the aisle are going to oppose this phrase.
Some say it's just a phrase supporting palestinians, but I like to take it literally, and this is what it's saying, from the river (ie, the Jordan river, on the east boundary of Israel), to the sea (ie, the mediterranian sea), Palestine will be free. Basically Palestine will have their own state that goes from one end of Israel/Palestine...to the others. And the Palestinians presumably will control it, rather than it being controlled by Israel, who they see as illegitimate occupiers of the land. Basically, it's about palestinian nationalism. It implies the destruction of Israel. To accomplish a destruction of Israel, it would entail basically a literal genocide. So that's why most normies hate this phrase.
But let's face it, most leftists actually dont like Israel. They see it as a "settler colonial state" that illegitimately occupies the land. They believe the land rightfully belongs to the palestinians. They implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) want the israelis gone.
Now, in all fairness, I do think we can question the wisdom of establishing a jewish state in this region. It wasnt the best of ideas in retrospect. HOWEVER, that was almst 80 years ago, let's get over it now. It's basically beyond what I'd consider a reasonable statute of limitations. Remember what I said about how laws and the like exist for the living, and let's face it, anyone who reasonably remembers a time where there was no state of israel is OLD. MAD OLD. If they were adults back then (ie, the age of culpability), they'd be in their 90s in a nursing home, if not dead. So again, let's not litigate the legitimacy of the state of Israel. it's done, it exists now, I dont give a crap about the past. It's too late to do anything, let's move forward. And any movement forward means recognizing that state deserves to exist.
What of a palestinian state. Well...Im less sympathetic here at this point. Mainly because, as I said, Palestine lost much of their once legitimate claims due to warfare that they themselves started. They really do have a habit of picking a fight with Israel, and Israel wins, and then takes more land. And thats how we got the occupation as opposed to a true 2 state solution. Im not sure a 2 state solution is even viable btw, like logstically. I mean you got palestine in gaza, then this weird mess of land in the west bank, and there's just no logistics there. No way they can get and keep supplies in, no way they can have a standing military. THey're just at israel's mercy. Does this mean israel should back off? Well they have a right to their land and to defend themselves too. I admit palestinian concerns are secondary to me because the way the history went, palestine are the clear losers here and honestly, i dont care to relitigate that. So it's like eh...
What is the answer here? I don't know. I gave up even trying. The answer isnt to abolish israel to give the land back to palestine though. I will admit, israel is going too far, they are basically committing genocide. And they should back off and NOT do that. I dont support Bibi Netanyahu's approach to the war at this point, even if some sort of response to 10/7 was justified, and this is a massacre. But do I really have any solid solutions? No. Honestly, these guys are gonna have to back off of each other, ease tensions and start cooperating toward some sort of peace. If they cant do that, this bloodshed is just gonna continue, and honestly, I just wash my hands of this situation. Its like pontius pilate with Jesus. Do what you will, I want nothing to do with this. Whatever happens happens.
Regardless, I am going to condemn the weirdo left who are effectively palestinian nationalists here calling for a genocide of Israel. I don't think that's unreasonable, and leftists getting pissed off over this need to find a different slogan if they wanna sympathize with palestine. There are multiple solutions. Two state solution, permanent occupation, shared power in the same country, etc. Pick one and stick with it. I doubt anyone will be happy, which is why i've stopped even trying on this issue though.
I mean for all the talk about how the west sticks its nose into everything it's rich that leftists seem to be trying to dictate a solution to these other people in another part of the world and telling them what's right. Not even I do that. Because ultimately, this is something for those factions to figure out on their own, not for the west to impose some sort of solution on them out of some biased sense of morality. In other words, maybe the left should practice what they preach and stop acting like colonialists telling these other people what they should be doing. Just a thought.
Anyway that's all I wanted to say here.
