Just a blurb, but I've recently found out that pfizer wants to have a 400% increase on covid vaccines post the government giving them away from free, and wants to charge $110-130 for them.
And, let me just say, screw capitalism insofar as healthcare goes.
Seriously, healthcare is so broken. We allow the company to privatize the costs, and guess what happens? They go through the roof. And they know you'll pay it, because screw you, that's why. Capitalism might be fine for a lot of things, but for something like healthcare, it's just trash. These companies know they can extort every last penny out of people and will, because they know you'll pay it if you need this stuff to live.
They did the same thing with insulin. I heard the creator sold the patent for $1 or something crazy since he wanted it to be free and widely accessible. And now that costs hundreds of dollars a dose. Why? because screw you, that's why. You'll pay anyway.
What we had with COVID vaccines over the past 3 years has been a taste of what single payer would be like with everything. You go to the doctor, they give you a shot, boom, done, no charge, no nothing. See you in 6 months to a year. Now we're not doing that any more because the government chose to cut it off. And now we're going back to good old free market healthcare where they charge ridiculous prices for stuff needed to live, and if you arent willing to pay, you can just die I guess.
God, I hate this society sometimes.
Like, just to tie this in with what I was saying with the hobbesian hypothesis. Sure, in a society with no state, there would likely be no covid vaccine, so the hobbesian hypothesis is met in that sense (although you could argue the modern work environment exposes people to covid, people did so in the comments section of where I found this article). BUT....other countries wouldnt have you deal with this. They would do a better job with healthcare. So we should be like them. We could even make this stuff free for everyone, and it would benefit everyone. Our society should center around human well being, not profit. Profit is only acceptable as it's a motivator to create things for human well being, but given the vaccine was largely subsidized by the government, I mean, is this really a product of the free market really?
Anyway, this crap should be subsidized by the government. Profit margins might be down, but ya know what? Im okay with it. As long as the sausage would be made either way. Im not gonna say that profit motives are really good for healthcare. Because it just leads to a lot of price gauging and a lot of anti humanitarian sentiments. Our society really does keep people on a treadmill just to survive. Markets are fine, but market fundamentalism is not. I really do think medicine, of all things, should be socialized as it is subject to severe market failures.
And yeah. We had a taste of single payer, it was great, and now we're back to good old american crapitalism. Yay....
