So...does everyone remember that one meme that I often cite that mentions "slavery with extra steps"? Yeah, that episode is highly relevant to this whole discussion.
So...as we can see from this clip, Rick has a car battery with a whole civilization inside. And that civilization makes power to charge his battery. And Morty points out how this is "slavery with extra steps", while Rick insists that this is just "society." Well...what if I told you....society under jobism basically is slavery with extra steps? It literally is.
So....if one watches the episode, they quickly figure out what the problem is with the power. The society went full on infinite energy mode themselves. They themselves created a battery with a whole civilization inside giving them power. And that civilization eventually makes yet another civilization inside another battery giving them power.
Basically, each civilization gets to the point where we're approaching now, where they don't actually have to work any more. And as such, they go full leisure mode, causing the owner of the battery, Rick in this case, the other civilizations in the other cases, to get pissed off because they stopped producing juice for them. Because, from Rick's perspective, what is the point of this civilization if they won't produce energy?
Well, that's how parts of the billionaire class look at us. We produce wealth for them. Our whole society is designed via "slavery with extra steps" to keep us working, while they siphon a portion of the wealth for themselves. But if AI and automation does the work for them, they don't need us any more, and as such, we're now expendable to them. And because these guys have really F-ed up mindsets, see themselves as the "real" owners of society, and long for the days of being monarchs and feudal lords, they wanna go back to that, and if we protest worsening conditions as AI and automation cause mass unemployment a few decades down the line, they wanna be prepared to protect their stuff.
And that also happens with this civilization. Rick basically gives the civilization an ultimatum. They keep working, forever, producing power for his battery, or their world will end. I'm serious. That's how the episode ends. So they dismantle their infinite energy machines, and continue to produce power for Rick to power his car battery, knowing the alternative is death.
That basically sounds analogous to where we are as a society. The billionaires are rick, we are the civilization, it is slavery with extra steps, with the political powers that be extending that servitude as long as possible as they fear change and take the route of least resistance (many might not even realize how screwed this situation is and how its artificially imposed on us), and with AI on the horizon, the tech billionaires at least are trying to prepare for a situation where we might do away with human laborers, but rather than live a life of leisure, basically, they would rather see us die from starvation than give us a UBI.
It's extremely messed up.
And of course, I'm here arguing for FREEDOM. I want that life of leisure, and dont believe we should exist simply to serve the billionaire class. We were supposed to have left the monarchy behind in 1776 and established a new system "with liberty and justice for all". However, it seems like our society doesn't live up to those ideals. The wealthy business interests are like a 4th branch of government that goes unchecked, and they're running our society into a ditch. We need money out of politics STAT and we need to limit private incursion into politics. Our politicians should be there to serve the people, not be beholden to wealthy special interests. The fact that the wealthy can basically just buy elections should be disturbing.
And I wanna make this clear. These people have no real political power on their own. They're not in elected office, but, they flood our system with money. When i say these people are aligned with the Trump administration, what I mean is that they give Trump money, and he does quid pro quo for them. What do you think DOGE was? Just giving Elon Musk, this unelected tech bro billionaire unfettered access to our government? What about Peter Thiel with Palantir and how info used from DOGE is likely being used to create creepy 1984-esque databases on every American? What about how JD Vance was chosen as VP, possibly knowing he has a similar belief system as Thiel? I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorists, but this one seems real.
And then you got the democrats. It's been no surprise that the party has been marching to the beat of the donors' drummers for a while. I'd even say at this point they seem paid to lose. And why did Biden inevitably drop out? The donors forced the dems' hand, that's what. They threatened to cut off funding and it worked. They dropped Biden and Harris was in. To be fair, Biden did give an F U to those donors on the way out in endorsing harris, but yeah. The donors seem to run everything behind the scenes, because they control the money.
As long as these people control politics, a life of leisure will never be a thing. They would rather drive us to authoritarianism where they exert even MORE control, than to allow a redistributionist like Bernie or Yang to actually take power. The status quo will remain the status quo. And you better be happy with it, because the alternative to this system of jobs is the billionaires just imposing mass starvation on people because they don't want their wealth redistributed. It sickens me. But this is where society seems to be. Maybe they dont exert control as firmly as rick does over his battery world, but the effect is the same nevertheless.
