I don't get how republicans can stand by Donald Trump

So, Trump didn't seem to get arrested today, so so much for that, although it does seem like a possible indictment could come down any day now. Was Trump full of crap? Eh, probably not. He probably knows what's coming but doesn't know exactly when, or maybe he did know but his little stunt changed the timing given him calling for a protest is more or less the equivalent of him calling for another Jan 6th. Yeah, we know what you were actually saying, Donny. You wanted your followers to protect you.

Which is what I really wanted to discuss here. Why....does the modern right adore this guy so much, and why do people seem willing to go over the cliff for this guy? I mean, I was reading some patriots.win content to see what THEY were saying about his imminent arrest and some of them literally were calling for at least a general strike, if not a revolution. it was almost as if these guys were in a different world than me. Like their conception of reality is so off base, idk how they can believe it.

I mean, I'm going to be honest, you guys know my past, I've talked about my past as a conservative pretty extensively, and while cults of personality are not unknown on the right, people seemed to practically worship Ronald Reagan and some were really into Ron Paul, but for the most part, it seemed obvious it was less about the people but the ideals they represented. Reagan was the guy who got conservatism out of the dog house. The new deal realignment in 1932 destroyed the right, and they weren't able to take the narrative back until 1980. And while yes, there has been a lot of mythology about him (for example, I watched Kyle Kulinski go on about how his strong man thing on foreign policy was a farce and how Reagan basically committed treason to keep the hostages in Iranian custody until he became president), and a lot of it isn't really true, or hasn't age very well, I can kinda, sorta see how a conservative leaning boomer type would think, once we got into the 1980s and the country straightened out from its troubled years in the 70s, that Reagan was the answer. He had an ideology that resonate at the time, for better or for worse, and inspired a generation of conservatives to follow in his footsteps. Ron Paul had similar energy when I went through that cringey right libertatian phase us conservative white males often do around the age of 20. He kinda represented a return to a more pure form of conservatism at the time, one focused on small government and stuff. And I can even see the original appeal of Trump in 2016. Hillary was a turd, he promised to make america great again, and told off Clinton and the left and all of the prude type people who get offended at everything. As I stated back then, the dude was a troll, and people kept feeding him.

But I don't get how anyone can still support Trump now. At best, I would be one of those fox news host guys who are talking crap behind closed doors about how they hate the guy and want him gone, but they might publicly support him to save face with his supporters. But his rabid supporters? I don't get it. People get way too cultish of this man, and it seems to go against what I saw conservatism was about, when I was a conservative. It was about small government, and the constitution. Conservatives were small government people, they thought government was tyranny, and that the constitution was sacrosanct, and that the importance of this document and of conservatism was to protect america from tyrants. It seems like, post January 6th, this dude IS a tyrant. Like seriously, the people there literally committed insurrection. people have GONE TO JAIL for that too. And they did it becausr this dude was a sore loser and said it was rigged. Even at my most brainwashed, i probably could have figured out that that wasn't true. I respect our institutions, and the GOP needs to face the facts that they lost. And now they still support him, some being willing to die on their swords to stop this guy from being arrested for...*checks notes*, paying a porn star hush money from illegal campaign funds.

This is what the modern GOP is rallying around. protecting this guy, this piece of crap guy, who wants to abolish the constitution, have a dictatorship, and who is corrupt as all heck, from going to jail. What. The actual. Fudge?

I just can't with these guys any more. I just can't. The GOP is just so off base and in their own little world, I've come to realize if I was conservative, I'd probably be one of those John Kasich weirdos joining the forward party and trying to join the democrats, who have fiscally and socially conservative ideas, but who would think the liberals are communists, but that the trumpers are crazy. That's who these kinds of people appeal to. People who still believe in conservative ideology, but who are being thrown out of the GOP because it's turning into Rammstein's Angst music video.

Me, I left the conservative movement 10 years ago, when they were just starting to get absolutely insane, and I was so shaken by it i rethought my entire convictions and became more liberal. I guess, in the long term, leaving the GOP was inevitable. It was just a matter of when and how. I got out when the getting was good. The tea party just took over, I started looking around at these guys, and I was like, NOPE. NUH UH. And I was so alienated I went hard left. But if I stuck around, and kept my ideals, I still think I would've been displaced by Trump 5-10 years later. There was no way I'd want to stick around, even with my 2000s ideals. I just never had this cult of personality thing going on that he attracts. Even if I really like certain leaders, Bernie, Yang, etc., I'm not afraid to disagree with them, and if they were going to push for an insurrection like trump was, or have the issues that trump has, I would've thrown them out years ago.

Even if you voted for Trump in 2016, and even if you voted for him in 2020 to a lesser extent, I don't know how people can just stick around and take it.  I mean, at some point, I would think people would wake up and realize this guy is a nutcase and a demagogue, right? Right?

I fear for the future of this country if trumpism is still around past 2030. Seriously, conservatives, do better. I ain't a fan of your beliefs either way, but Trump is everything the constitution is there to protect people against. Stop following this guy off of a cliff.
