So, 8 democrats have decided to join with the republicans to end the government shutdown. That's it, they caved, we lost. And I ain't happy.
This is why people hate democrats. They have no spine, and they have this weird idea that compromise for its own sake is a good thing. It's not. Politics is an exercise of power. It's a battle between ideas, belief systems, and worldviews. The right realizes it, and the left (well, center) keeps appealing to this substanceless vision of decorum and compromise. The right always sets the terms of the debate, and these compromise happy democrats are always happy to meet them half way. And they got played like a fiddle again.
Let me remind you guys what this shutdown was about. The right's budget bill had poison pills in it to kick people off of medicaid and to defund ACA subsidies, which would cause millions of people to lose their healthcare, and for some peoples' health insurance to quadruple in price. The democrats decided not to vote for this resolution, and to filibuster in response. The republicans responded by cutting SNAP, even going so far to refuse to use emergency SNAP funds when ordered by the court. The lesson is this: let us cut your healthcare, or we won't allow you to eat either.
As far as I'm concerned, the battle between the left and the right is one of good vs evil. Democrats are far from perfect, but when one side is trying to protect peoples' safety nets that they need to survive, and the other is trying to cut them, it's pretty black and white, despite the fact that the republicans obviously spin it like we're the ones shutting down the government because we wanna give "healthcare to illegals" or something (keep in mind, in the trump years, anyone they dont like is an "illegal"). The democrats held firm for over a month, but now they finally got 8 democrats to "cross the picket line" so to speak and to vote on the republican bill to reopen the government. We lost. We lost because of these wishy washy compromisers who BELIEVE IN NOTHING. There. I said it.
This is why I hate centrists. They don't have a vision. They dont have convictions. They dont have beliefs they fight for. Their ideal is that is civility and compromise, which means always meeting the other side half way. As far as I'm concerned, they're traitors, and they should be primaried the next election.
I especially hope to see John Fetterman primaried. He's my senator. I voted for him in 2022 in PA in the primaries last time because I thought he was the most progressive candidate who had a shot at winning. He's been nothing but a disappointment. He's basically the modern Kyrsten Sinema and he always finds a way to genuflect at the altar of MAGA or sell out to some special interest. That stroke really changed him as a person, and I really have buyers remorse over that one. I hope to rectify that mistake in 2028. At this point, even Lamb looks like a better option.
Sell outs. They're all sell outs.
Oh, and you know what? I cant even say this is what the voters wanted. You cant claim that. We just had elections last week and the GOP took a massive shellacking. Why? Arguably, it's because the people know the republicans are responsible for the shutdown and are negotiating in bad faith.
Again, NO ONE ON THE LEFT WAS ASKING FOR THIS! They should've held the line. Now we look weak (which is the problem with the dems in the first place, and why the party has such low approval ratings), and we just gave MAGA what they wanted in the first place.
