So, we already discussed a lot of the two major parties in the UK, a moderate conservative party that seems to be focused on conserving and not changing much except in mild incremental ways, and the labor party, which basically advocates for socialism. Translating to the American perspective, I'd classify the conservative party as being similar to a bipartisan coalition of republicans and democrats, essentially being a "moderate party" by our standards. They're left of the republicans, but right of the democrats. Perhaps akin to Richard Nixon's republican party. The labor party is basically an outright socialist party, which is way left of the democrats, and has politics reminiscent of the green party or DSA here in the US. So, I just wanted to know. The UK is a multiparty parliamentary democracy, and I've seen maps where other parties have seats, so I wanted to look at what other parties exist in the UK.
Well, there's a lot of them, but to name some of the more significant ones:
Scottish national party- This seems to be primarily a regional party based around Scottish interests, and seems to offer, by American standards, a fairly progressive platform. Although, after looking at the conservative and labor parties, this seems to be standard fare center left. Its biggest unique idea seems to be advocating for an independence referendum for Scotland. Other than that nothing particularly stands out to me.
Liberal democrats- Compared to the labor party, these guys seem to be a more mainstream party akin to the democrats in practice. They don't seem to offer anything radical, but they do seem to criticize the failures of the conservative policies and offer mild incremental fixes to a lot of their most flawed ideas, as well as offer a fairly standard liberal platform on social issues. They don't seem to have many seats, primarily due to the prevalence of the labor party's dominance on left wing politics in the UK.
Those are the two most go to alternatives to the two party dominance between conservatives and labor. Looking at others...
Democratic unionist party- They seem to be a party focused primarily around Northern Ireland and seem to largely be focused on overturning Brexit, returning to the EU, and also offering an alternative to the Corbyn led labor party.
Sinn Fein/Plaid Cymru/SDLP/Alba Party- These seem to be regional parties similar to the SNP, but focused on various independence movements within the UK.
Green Party- Oh look, they have one too. These guys are an alternative to labor and have a focus on ecopolitics. And, because I'm a UBI stan, they advocate for replacing social credit with UBI amounting to around $125 a week in US currency. Not...great on the amount there, but not much worse than social credit, and it would solve every other problem with social credit, so....
They are normally a laughably small party holding like only one seat in all of parliament, but they seem to be doing relatively well in an era where labor is faltering.
Alliance Party of Northern Ireland- Another moderate party, yay...
All in all, the UK has a lot of parties, but much like the US they're practically a "two party" system, with conservatives and labor dominating. The largest non regional party is the liberal democrats, similar to our democrats, and offer a more centrist alternative between the two parties. Most other parties, minus the greens, are largely regional parties.
All in all, if I were in the UK, I'd vote green for UBI, but I would also be open to labor, and maybe the lib dems if I could stomach a more moderate platform. But those would be the order I would rank my preferences. Green, Labor, then Lib Dems. And if Labor endorsed UBI I would vote for them. But, they seem skeptical of such solutions due to being overly ideological, so meh.
British politics are interesting compared to the US. The overton window is generally much more left there. I mean, the conservatives there aren't quite as left as our democrats, but I'd say they're closer to them than to our republicans, who are insane. These guys are a moderate conservative party. Then the left is actually left, representing more socialist type politics. And the other parties are mostly regional or moderate.
