So I got a bit further in the story, and, uh, the emissary made their point. Warning, spoilers ahead.
Basically, the artifacts killed earth. Like literally. Scientists started using them to power grav drives, and the gravity fields they generated screwed up the magnetosphere and led to the collapse of the atmosphere. And everyone on earth died. But at the same time, humanity spread across the galaxy.
Was it worth it? No. Because all the civilization in starfield is nothing compared to earth. Seriously, we got like 3 major settlements with a 4th if you count a certain pirate's bay (yarrrr!). We got a few other reasonably sized settlements. And then we got like tons of tiny settlements, with most of them being controlled by various mercenary and pirate groups. yes, humanity is everywhere, but they're not in a good state. Anyone who has played star field will tell you that it's dead and there isn't enough to do. I think the problem isnt the game itself though. But yes, if this is what the future in the stars looks like, yeah, losing earth sucks.
It's kinda like the whole climate change debate. We're messing with the earth there too. But then it's like, hey at least we survived because elon musk made a moon colony. Like wtf. You killed the earth, our home planet, the one we are best adapted to, and now we're living on maybe a handful of other habitable planets that are at best just ok, and at worst, not really good matches at all.
In real life, I'd rather have utopia on earth than a hard life in the stars, and life in starfield doesnt seem easy. Maybe it appeals to certain people with their frontier spirit. Theres plenty of planets and land to claim, anyone can go out there and "make it". But it seems like a good proportion of them become pirates and just kill others. I get that the game is designed like that to give the players stuff to do, but yeah.
Oh, and the ones who arent pirates or random colonists in the middle of nowhere are generally expected to have jobs like it's the fricking 20th century. They literally didnt solve the problems of scarcity in this sci fi future. If anything they made it worse. Most people seem to be living on the edge. Sure you got some rich people in some major settlements living large but even then most arent that well off. There's a ton of anachronisms to our time that in an ideal future dont make sense to me, and obviously, the social problems of the 21st century exist in full force, if they aren't flat out made worse by the sheer scarcity that exists and how it's literally easier for most to take what they want by force than to do an honest day's work.
So yeah. Siding with the emissary here. Messing around with advanced tech you dont understand is dangerous. And then I did yet another quest after that that involved dealing with flipping between multiple universes. Remember that one titanfall 2 level where you had that remote that let you flip between a pretty modern high tech environment and then another version that's all busted up and on fire? Yeah, this game has that, except the busted up and on fire one is full of alien scorpions. But yeah, the artifacts, once again, caused that, because yeah, people dont know what they're doing with them. The idea of trying to keep them out of bad hands is actually a noble goal. So yeah, emissary it is. They made their point. Just wanted to continue on that as I found this moral dilemma interesting.
