So Mike Johnson recently gave an interview where he's talking about punishing the colleges financially over the college protests on gaza, and I'm just like WTF. He basically wants to punish the colleges financially for allowing protesters to speak out and say things that he doesn't agree with. And that's messed up.
Look, I want to be clear, on the college protests. Here are my exact concerns with them from a free speech perspective. They are dangerous, as some are going beyond the bounds of just peaceful protests and creating an environment that's hostile and threatening to others, and they are taking place on private property, and denying people their rightful use of that property.
If anything, it's the college that is encouraging the police to remove the protesters. The goal is to get them out of there so the colleges can reopen, classes can resume, etc. Why would we PUNISH THE COLLEGES over this? They're the victims. It's their institution, it's being unlawfully held up by these people, and the colleges already have issued orders for people to vacate. The reason the police are coming in and forcefully removing people is because they aren't vacating. And the reason I'm primarily condemning the protesters is because they aren't operating within the confines of the first amendment.
But the colleges can do whatever they want. it's their property. Mike johnson can screw off with his desire to punish colleges for hosting speech he does not like. Seriously, for all the talk the right likes to make of free speech and cancel culture, they LOVE shutting down lefties when they can. They LOVE attacking universities, which are places of higher learning, and teach people things that might make them out grow conservatism. And that's what this is about. More culture war nonsense to punish colleges and to try to force them to be more conservative in the future. ANd that should be resisted.
Also, there are already plenty of incentives that would encourage the colleges to want the protesters gone. They cant guarantee student safety. If the students get hurt, the colleges could be legally liable, and open to lawsuits, so they have to shut down. If they shut down, they might have to refund tuition, or face other tarnishing of their brand. They might not be able to have in person graduations, which might piss off some students and parents. So there's already plenty of incentive for the colleges to remove the protesters and go back to normal operation. There's no reason to try to pull funding for these guys, or to tax endowments, or whatever Mike Johnson wants to do, to punish the institutions for this. heck, the idea to punish the institutions like this is dumb, authoritarian, and even fascist. Screw Mike Johnson. Mind your own business. If you're so much a free market propertarian republican, you should support the right of the colleges to do what they want with their property. If they allow that crap on their campus that is their right, but let's face it, most of them already DONT want it on their campus. It's the police's job to remove them. The college can't control these kids. That's why the police is there in the first place. Let them handle it in the least aggressive way possible.
