yeah so I'm on a warpath tonight.
I feel like the democratic party is kind of learning about why things ended up going so badly and some of it was the lack of economic populism. But then that certain brand of centrist neoliberal just doesnt get it. They just start coming in and are like OH YEAH? WHAT ABOUT THE CHIPS ACT? THE AMERICAN RECOVERY ACT? THE INFLATION REDUCTION ACT?! It's like they think just listing off random policies will resonate with voters.
I'll put it simply. What people want more than anything is CHANGE. They want policies that help THEM. In 2016, the problem was jobs. Now the problem is inflation. I admit, I still have my politics based in a pre COVID world, but even post COVID I think I understand well enough that this current flavor of the month is temporary and will pass the second we get another recession. Which may be in the next couple of years, maybe. Idk. Anyway, point is, in both 2016 and 2024, people want their lives to be improved, and policies like this dont connect to people. Maybe you can make a case that they very indirectly help some people but most people are just not gonna feel like the dems did anything and will tune out and give up on them.
Really, I get that neolibs are often quite educated on policy, but they also have very establishment and conventional ideas that don't resonate, they're often not invested in the policies themselves, being relatively wealthy and successful, and they mostly follow politics like it's their favorite football team. So while I'm over here trashing the coach like mark on last week's Universal Basic Guys episode (yeah I'm still watching that), these guys are like OH YEAH? WELL THE COACH IS ACTUALLY DOING A GOOD JOB AND YOU'RE TOO STUPID TO SEE THAT. To which I have two numbers for you. 226....312. That's the score. you lost the game. Again. Please shut up.
The fact is, no one liked Biden, the dude was so radioactive not even the solid blue states wanted him. And I admit, he wasnt that bad, he doesnt deserve the reputation he has of being the second coming of Jimmy Carter, but here's the problem with Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter was seen as ineffective. he was seen as incompetent. And he was seen as overseeing a government which did F all for Americans' lives at the time. As Ronald Reagan said back then, big government doesnt work, and carter was the embodiment there.
Given Biden is the modern iteration of that, I think that he should get the same treatment. Except is the solution...more government? Actually yes. because im not a reaganite. I'm not a conservative. The problem with democrats like biden is actually that they dont go left enough. They exist in the "uncanny valley of suck" where their policies both repel right wingers who want the democrats to do literally nothing, and the left, who wants the government to do stronger, more universal solutions that help more people.
You need one or the other, this centrist lukewarm crap appeals to no one. And that's why democrats like Biden are unpopular. No one cares about this laundry list of arbitrary accomplishments. We arent feeling our lives getting better. And while I've been afraid to go for full on UBI this election cycle...uh...what's the best way to improve living standards? Well, we need people to get more money. The economy isnt gonna deflate so that means we need to either raise wages or give people cash directly. Trump was running on no tax on tips. He was running on tax cuts. Why can't we run on UBI or an NIT? Were already doing the child tax credit, that's UBI for kids, but why not give it to everyone? Maybe then we'd actually win back the "bro" vote somewhat, because white males kinda what help too and they tend to vote republican because they dont see the government as helping them.
The reason dems arent popular is they dont help everyone. They have policies that kinda sorta help some people, and dont help others. Those the policies do help tend to vote democrat, those who they dont tend to vote republican. And yeah, thats how we get this weird system we're in. People vote republican when they see their own financial system being helped by voting for republicans. They vote democrat when they see democrats doing it. The more dems do these mediocre piecemeal programs, the less people give a crap about democrats. Because democrats arent helping them.
Democrats need to grow a spine and be more bold. And do I need to say it? F the dick cheney vote. I tolerated that crap since i believed defeating a fascist was more important short term, but now that the election is over and we lost anyway, the gloves are coming off and I'm saying what i think. I didnt want these guys joining us back in 2016, I dont want them in 2024. They obstruct me from getting what I want, and barring the existential threats to democracy, I resent being in the same coalition as these people. And given most people are just gonna openly support the fascist anyway, i might as well just say it. Because maybe if I do, it will bring people back to the dems.
The fact is, the neoliberal branch of the democratic party should be DOA after this election. I know they wont be. because the party leadership is in their own little world and will refuse to concede power and will keep pushing the same failed strategy on us again and again. THe dems have the attitude that they cant fail, they can always be failed, and theres probably a healthy faction that still thinks the problem is that the 10 million voters who didnt show up were at fault because they shouldnt just supported the dems or else. Because that's how these idiots think.
It's like trying to get an 81 year old to turn over the keys because they're too old to drive any more. Both literally and figuratively. And then when we do we replace him with the 60 year old "fun" aunt who cant drive worth a crap either.
Ugh. Either way, I'm not listening to you guys. You lost. Shut up. Your opinions are about as worthless as our 226 electoral votes. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done. Because this is the second election you people blew for us and im fricking getting tired of it.
