So, with election season among us, I have been kind of spending time in different circles online, focusing on communities that focus on election predictions, rather than hanging out in normally all left wing spaces I normally hang out in. This involves dealing with more diversity of opinion, and maybe, just maybe, ended up in an environment where trumpers exist. Despite high polarization, these communities seem relatively chill and low key. Some issues form, and I know in two communities I'm in there's bifurcation as one sub trends more toward conservatism and trump, and the other trends toward liberalism and harris, but generally speaking, if you're not a butthole, you'll be generally treated relatively well. Not saying it's a perfect experience, but it's the internet, discussing politics, during campaign season, it almost never is.
And going back to my old stomping grounds, I almost feel out of place. The tribalism there is completely and utterly off the charts. And I'm not even talking hostility toward trumpers. I'm talking the stupid SJWs pushing blue no matter who going at it with the free palestine kiddies over the virtues of third party voting.
I ended up writing some articles about this last night, but I do have one more I want to write, especially since I got this crap in my inbox today:
“Voter shaming” is not a thing. Who you vote for or how you choose to vote is a reflection on your morality and character, just like any other choice. It is beyond strange that people pretend it is somehow a sacred thing that cannot be criticized.
I didn't even engage with this guy seriously, I've dealt with these idiots enough and know that trying to engage with them never ends well, but to actually discuss my views, I'll say this.
Yes, it is a thing, and I'm tired of pretending it isn't. Yes, voter shaming IS a reflection of your morality and character, and that's the thing, people, even on the left, have different moral systems. What a lot of these would be leftists dont understand is that HEY NOT EVERYONE THINKS ACCORDING TO YOUR MORAL SYSTEM, AND WE'RE FRICKING SICK AND TIRED OF YOUR CONSTANT HARASSMENT WHEN PEOPLE DARE TO THINK OUT OF LOCKSTEP WITH YOU!
Really, I think social justice politics is the worst thing that could've happened to the left (this may be a slight exaggeration, but you get the idea). Like OMFG, STFU. No one wants to hear self righteous screeds from those people about how if they dont vote for YOUR preferred candidate, that we're throwing OMG and the women and the minorities, and the LGBT+ under the bus. Not all morality is a circlejerk about caring about underprivileged groups, and I'm tired of pretending it is.
Really, if you're on the outside looking in, all you see with this stuff is a cesspit of toxicity, and people who are too in their own little segregated internet spaces where no dissent is allowed, and everyone is in 100% group think with each other. And that's not how the real world works.
Also, did I mention that this behavior is INEFFECTIVE?! You're not gonna persuade crap by harassing people over how they vote. ANd that applies to both sides of THIS particular debate. Quite frankly, there's a reason i call the free palestine kiddies the "kiddies", because they're all immature AF and are just as obnoxious and self righteous as the other group. RAWR GENOCIDE GENOCIDE GENOCIDE, YOU'RE ENDORSING GENOCIDE!
Like, I really wish we could adopt a code of etiquette more akin to the less partisan spaces where I'm discussing election predictions, where it's like everyone has their views, but as long as you're not a jack### about it, we can all get along. That kind of civility is needed for society to...well...function. We live in a pluralistic society, not everyone agrees with you, fricking come to terms with it and deal with it.
Even worse, this self righteous behavior is actually what gives rise to the trumpers and their mentality in the first place. Because quite frankly they're so tired of putting up with your crap too they've literally built up their entire worldview around "owning" people who don't agree with them by "triggering" them and pissing them off. And yes, I mean you. They literally go out of their way to cut their nose to spite their face, specifically to piss you guys off. Because it's cathartic. Because the rest of society is so sick and tired of your batcrap insane self righteous crap that they'd rather vote for a fascist than to give you the satisfaction of getting what you want.
And that's really what like 80% of our political discourse is. The SJWs vs the alt right and the self righteous vs the people who laugh at pissing you guys off because it's fricking funny.
The only reason I havent joined them is because, well...I originally came from there. I know what they're about, and I would actually like a left wing that isn't fricking insane so we can actually make progress. We got good ideas, but we gotta drop this obnoxious behavior because it does nothing but alienate people from our cause. I'm not saying we can ever win anyone over, but if you have ideas that could on paper benefit 80% of people...why not lean into that? But hey, have fun sitting on your moral high horse going on about how much you care about others. No one fricking cares, and you're making the rest of society that much less empathetic because of it.
Really, SJWism is a cult. It is. It's literally just christianity but for lefties. Same energy. And as someone who left the right to get away from that, I would like to not lose because you end up pissing people off. Because the left's ideas are actually pretty good, much better than the right's, but....this self righteous attitude is just gonna drive people to the other side. It would drive me to the other side if I wasn't already intellectually vaccinated against their BS too. Because let's face it, I hate your guts too, and I wish you all would like, go away, take a chill pill, touch grass, and come back with a less toxic attitude toward politics.
